Tan-Through Swimwear FAQ: Every Question, Answered Honestly

If you are new to tan-through swimwear or just doing your research before buying, these are the questions we get most often. We have answered them directly and without the marketing spin.

About the Fabric

What exactly is tan-through fabric?

It is a micro-perforated textile — fabric knitted with millions of tiny pores that allow ultraviolet light to pass through to the skin underneath. The pores are structural (built into the knit, not punched or chemically created) and are calibrated to transmit UV at roughly the rate of a medium-level SPF sunscreen.

Is it the same as mesh?

No. Mesh has much larger, visible openings and is not UV-calibrated. Tan-through fabric has micro-pores that are not visible to the naked eye but are large enough to allow UV transmission. Mesh also does not provide the same coverage, fit performance, or quick-dry properties as purpose-built tan-through fabric.

Does the fabric lose its tan-through properties over time?

With proper care, no. The pore structure is part of the fabric's physical construction and does not degrade with normal use. Damage can come from: machine drying (heat distorts the knit structure), harsh detergents, and excessive wring-drying. Hand washing in cold water and air drying preserves the fabric's properties.

About Tanning

How long does it take to tan through the suit?

It depends on your skin type and the UV index. People with olive or darker complexions may see results after a single session of 45-60 minutes in direct sun. Fair skin requires more sessions and more time. Build gradually and compare after three to four sessions.

Will the tan through the suit match the rest of my body?

It will approach an even match over multiple sessions. Because UV is filtered by the fabric, covered skin tans at a slightly slower rate than fully exposed skin. Applying SPF 30-40 to exposed skin slows those areas down, which helps the covered skin keep pace. After several sessions, the difference becomes minimal.

Can I burn through the fabric?

Yes. The fabric transmits UV — that is the point. It is not sunscreen. If you are in intense sun for extended periods, you can burn through the suit, particularly if you have fair skin or the UV index is very high. Apply SPF beneath the suit on particularly intense sun days if you are concerned.

Does it work in a tanning bed?

Yes, with caution. Tanning bed UV transmission through the fabric varies depending on lamp type and positioning. Start with very short sessions to assess results before extending exposure time.

Do I still need sunscreen?

Yes, always. The fabric filters UV on covered skin but does not eliminate it. All exposed skin — face, legs, shoulders, arms — needs proper SPF protection. Apply SPF 30-40 before sun exposure and reapply every 90 minutes.

About the Suit

Is it see-through?

No. The micro-pores are not visible to the naked eye. Prints and patterns add visual density that makes the fabric read as opaque. Oluzu suits include a modest front panel lining. That said, very light solid colors in any thin fabric can read as slightly sheer — we design around prints to minimize this.

Does it have padding or lining?

Women's tops: no padding (padding blocks UV). Bottoms and one-pieces: small front panel lining for modesty. Men's styles: no liner.

How does it fit compared to regular swimwear?

Oluzu suits are true to size. The construction is designed to lie flat against the skin, which matters for UV transmission performance. If you are between sizes, size up.

Can I swim in it?

Yes. The fabric is resistant to pool chlorine and ocean saltwater. Water passes through the pores rather than saturating the fabric, contributing to fast dry time. Rinse after each use to extend fabric life.

How do I wash it?

Hand wash or delicate machine cycle in cold water with gentle detergent. Never machine dry — heat damages the knit structure. Hang dry or lay flat. The suit will be dry within a few hours.

How long will it last?

With proper care, multiple seasons. The primary cause of premature wear is machine drying and harsh detergents. Rinse after saltwater use and air dry consistently.
